Editing of effects

Editing in Effects

For our urban drama we couldn't really do much effects as it was meant tot be a gritty hard drug opening scene which requires little effects. However, I thought some could be used when she was walking as that would make it more interesting to watch. So I decided to use the iconic security camera something which I could use in the skate park as that would make the most sense.

The shot I chose was positioned high and when walking towards it our previous shits were far enough away so that even in a camera was there you wouldn't be able to see it. So it could be realistic for all the audience would and wouldn't display any continuity errors.

This screen shot displays how I could change what was present in the image things like the date the name at the bottom and things like that. So what I did is I changed the date to what most people might associate with the footage. however this frustrated me cause I didn't realise the dates were order in American meaning the date originally read 01/18/2015 which obviously isn't possible. So I changed them around so that it now made sense.

In this image you can see the title and dates that have now been changed.
What I would to to improve this?

There is two different shots which included the security camera feed so what would make the transition better I could add a fuzzy effect which would follow me up to the next shot
I could not do that and add in a beep like the different views of the camera are changing this would be good as it could look like a security guard is watching.
This shot i like because it brings something different to the opening as what would otherwise be quite a plain walking scene.

Typography of Spectre

Spectre Typography Order

This deconstruction is to allow us to see what order each part of the title scene goes in that way we are able structure the editing to follow meaning we have no trouble wondering what title to put next.

Also incase I didn't know how to label a persons job title this deconstruction would help me with that too. So this would help me solve all those problems in the first place.

First title of production company they used a simple black white font standing out of the foreground no different of style just normal block writing making it look professional.

Then same writing slightly smaller but of main actor no sign of director or writer.

Main Title in foreground not a different font for the title before hand but this appears before any of the other people do even people like the director or other actors, which are vital to the film.

Actors

The next titles that appeared were actors and they included the words like starring and with to make all the roles seem interlinked in some sort of way as well as clumping the title on one shot as two may appear at once.

The titles last for about 32 seconds between 50 seconds and 1.22 and as I only have 2 minuets for my film opening i think the actors need to be mentioned for my opening from 20 seconds to like 40 just so I am able to mention the other people.

Other Mentionable Names

Next names to pop up are the co producers no word of the actual producer but haven't seen the director or producer yet which surprised me as I thought they would one of the first people mentioned.

People mentioned are camera operators and sound recording people that helped with those two. These roles are not that important as they are mentioned as a group unlike other films which mention one important name at a time. The names are still not in the way of the shot and do not take up a lot of room which should be achieved by titles.

Make up artists and things are mentioned after camera operators which I didn't know before hand suggesting they are quite an important role which surprised me.

The assistant director is mentioned next along with the second assistant director before the actual person is even mentioned this makes me realise that in this film the director is mentioned last and not first something I have not noticed before however would have to look at other films to make sure that they follow a similar format.

The costume designer is far behind the make-up or anything else however the name is singled out ever displaying its importance or as there was no one relevant to costumes over than this person which is why that is the only name we see.

This person is probably the main person editing which is something I am keen or putting into our film as I am going to be the main editor changing everything.

This is a role that is mentioned near the end displaying its importance but not how good it actually is something to know when putting in titles that we are able to mention.

This is one of the last opening credits we see right at the end of the clip this means were I have planed to put in the writer that he should not be included until right near the end.

Both the producer and the director are mentioned last which I think i should keep in my mind as I always thought that they were one of the most important people in the whole of the filming process. However this could be used so that people remember there name which is a strategy that I could use in my film opening at the end just to mention them really quickly like the successful film of spectre.

Editing (Placement of titles)

Titles Sequence

When deciding were and a what time to put my tiles I had to think of a couple of things.
  • What each member of my group did and what title is it most relatable to.
  • Whether I have to put there name and job title of just job title
  • What order those titles should be put in so that the importance of there role is displayed in the credits. So actors would be after director and writer.
Another thing is that I wanted to put the titles embedded in the background of the footage so that it looks good and is not in the way of anything important. This would also work if I put them in different effects such as security feed. However this was difficult as the software didn't let us embed titles which would of work for our footage.

The main titles I used were fade and basic titles these gave the best results and also looked the best in footage.
For example the title of the actor I used the size to make the name fit in-between the poles on top of the ramp this took a long time to do and I used a basic title to do this. This worked in this piece of footage as the title does not get in the way of anything. This is right after the director which was me I put in the actor and a name a description wouldn't work in this part as it would take up too much space.

I added in another actor in the security feed I thought this is good as it sticks to the corners and also I didn't need to change the title to a different colour as it already fitted into the background and the effect.

In the next shot there was another security feed and I did want to put in another person however feedback was that once was enough and there was no need and should put it in a different place.
Another technique I found out with the text is that I could turn the text round to different directions to fit into the background. When I see each short I always want to see if I could embed a title and if I can't then it will go into the bottom right or left depending what is in the shot.

I found it hard to put the titles in the bathroom as the shots were very short meaning they could not be seen easily.

To improve

  • I should add more titles I only have few at the moment and it would make the opening sequence a little more entertaining and something to keep them interested.
  • Also more titles would tell people more roles as most normal title sequences have at least 12 titles to fill the space.
  • As well as placing them in better locations so that people can see them easier as well as placing them embedded in the background.

Editing - Sound

Another part of the editing that I did was customizing the sounds in the extract. I had to learn a few editing techniques to make the sound was effectively use and pleasurable to the audience. This involved me changing volume and pitch of the sounds, putting in fades and al together removing sounds.

The first ting I learnt was removing sounds. this is done by detaching the audio footage form the clip. You click on the clip with the right mouse and then select detach audio. This audio is now in a separate box and can be moved or deleted freely. you could also slide the slider on the clip that controls volume to the bottom and this will mute all sound from the clip. These are screen shots taken from the mac to show the stages off dethatching the audio and changing the volume of the new audio.

Rewind

Rewinding

In the rewind I wanted to make it less than 5 seconds this is because when we added in the other bits of footage and I was worried that it would go other the time limit of about 2 minuets for a film opening.
First I imported a the footage backwards starting from when she was on the floor this is how the film is going to start before it rewinds. And finishing at when she gets up from the bench as you can see from the clips above the footage is backwards Then I would select all the pieces of footage that should not be in the clip limiting me to only a few this is important as it doesn't give away any of the scenes that are about to happen but look good enough for the start of our film.

After doing this I would reverse the clip on the editing software to the far right of Final cut. By clicking on reverse clip all the footage goes into rewind which puts all the clips in reverse so it looks normal and flows from the different places this only puts them in normal or 100% reverse I still have to change the speed.

Speed of Footage

I still felt that 400 was a bit too fast so I could edit the footage down into different speeds by tweaking it each time to a different speed even by 1% which makes minor correction I found that 367% was a good speed were you could see most of the footage. However, it did leave me some problems of the fact that some of the clips jumped as it he software could not process the information fast enough. As well as on the part were the girl rises from the floor was very fast and I find that it would be more powerful if it happened slower bringing a greater effect.

This is why I lowered the speed back down to 100% this did effect my time limit of 5 seconds however I managed to cut the time down of the other footage which meant more time could be spent on the rewind to make up some of the empty room. I also bladed some clips which is when you spilt them up in some cases this can be bad as it can glitch some footage which is meant to be stable. However in my case it stops the jumps by correcting the part which the footage misses I had to look at what I had over and over again to make sure each blade was in the correct place and as you can see from the below I clipped one clip a lot as that was the main part that stopped.

The rewind itself took a lot of work and time as some parts didn't work however to make it particularly good I wanted to layer sound of a heart beat in the background this I found difficult as I had to move the position of each singular heart beat.

Creating the Heartbeat Effect

I found that the sound file was very long this means I cropped out a singular heart beat which I could copy and move. Firstly though some of the footage that I deleted meant that there was black blank footage and the end of the film opening which I could use to make a transition of heart like representation of a heart beating between the different pieces of footage.

I moved them into place in-between each of the cropped clips that transitioned into the other. This almost creates a blinking effect which with a strong heart beat in the background could look good. Oe by one I moved each pieces of audio into place and the made the larger to get the full ventricular and atria beat to make it realistic.

Thoughts

I think the work that I did is good however some of the heart sounds could be louder to really monopolised the audiences viewing experience as well as divide the different clips better. I also feel that some of the clips are quite short and if I had more time to fill then I would reduce speed that way audiences can actually understand what is going on rather than the fact  it jumps by without them processing it.
After showing my class mates though for the first time they found the revealing rewind a good passage to the story line and also liked the fact that the heart beat made the viewing experience atmospheric.

Miramax Production company

This is an American Company however appears in some very good urban drams that follow similar conventions to what our film opening represents so is worth while looking at it for.

Miramax

It has been awarded for many films included urban dramas such as
Sin City

Reservoir dogs

Pulp Fiction

This film is based on gangs in the city of America fighting it out. They all mix with eachothers life in some sort of way creating funny and tense moments. But at its heart this film is a urban drama made by tarentino himself. The conventions it has in it are
Drugs
Guns
Sex
violence
Money

Trainspotting

This is about a person who is in a drug cycle with heroin who cannot escape his addiction with his friends so the only way to get rid of it is by leaving his friends with the money that they generated.
With regular and heavy drug use
Violence
Sex
Weapons such as knifes

Sound experimenting

all film sequences have a non diegetic sound track. This means that we will have to incorporate one when making a film opening sequence. All music sets of a certain tone, through the instruments used and the speed of he melodies. Also polyphonic music will give off a different vibe or texture to polyphonic melodies. All music in films is tailor made or suited to fit what is going on in the sequence so the music will aid the visuals. This means we need to choose something that will go wit our theme of drugs and depression.

Another problem we face is legal., We can not use any copyright music as it is illegal to use in our sequence. As a group we found a YouTube user that offers free un-copyright music for anyone to use. This allowed us to search through the music to find different sounds that we could use to find the one we wanted. Here are three options I thought that would sound good. we must now use these sounds and paste them into our piece to see what actually goes with the visuals seen on screen. this way we can decide one we are actually using.
